Our Mission

Because God desires salvation for all… Lutheran Braille Workers freely shares the Gospel with people who are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Our Vision

All people in the world who are Blind or Visually Impaired have free access to the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Lutheran Braille Workers exists to bring the Word of God to the 338 million people throughout the world who are Blind or Visually Impaired, completely free of charge, in Braille and Specialized Large Print.

Men, women, and children find hope in the Light of Christ through the Bible and other Christian materials provided by LBW in multiple languages in every part of the globe. LBW is one of the last remaining free resources available to them in which the Good News of Jesus is shared quickly and in high quality formats.

In over 80 years of ministry, Lutheran Braille Workers has produced and distributed over 15 million volumes of Christian material, in 40 languages, to people in 164 countries. LBW has never charged a recipient to receive these materials as we believe in freely sharing God’s Word!

Volunteers

There are over 3,000 active and engaged volunteers throughout the United States and Canada who passionately produce and prepare the materials distributed to people who are Blind or Visually Impaired throughout the world. These volunteers help produce almost 10,000 volumes of material every single month, in addition to the other incredible services they provide through narration, formatting, or transcribing. In fact, it is estimated this volunteer force helps LBW save over $6,000,000 in labor cost each and every year!

Volunteers range in age from 12-102, bringing multiple talents and skills to this organization. Some volunteers contribute two or three hours per month, while some volunteers spend hours every single week with this ministry. One thing they all possess and share is a passion for sharing the Gospel message with people who may not otherwise have access to the Bible.

If you possess this same passion for spreading the love of Christ, and want to be part of one of the most amazing teams of men and women on Earth, learn more about how you can volunteer today by clicking here!

Work with individuals who are Blind or Visually Impaired at our Ministry Outreach Centers. Join them for fellowship, Bible studies, hot meals, or other field trips and activities. Typically volunteers are needed once per month for four hours.

LBW produces approximately 150,000 volumes a year. Braille, Specialized Large Print, and Audio publications are available free of charge through the dedication of thousands of volunteers in over 115 Ministry Production Centers throughout the United States. Join a crew of dedicated and passionate volunteers who assemble and ship out Braille, Large Print, and Prison Ministry materials. Typically groups require 5-12 volunteers working for 2-4 hours per session.

Collaborate with Others including Prison Ministries

Lutheran Braille Workers assists a number of organizations in providing the Gospel via Braille, and Specialized Large Print. Some of the organizations which Lutheran Braille Workers has supported over the years includes United Bible Society, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), Braille Institute of Los Angeles, Braille Institute of the Desert, National Federation of the Blind (NFB), American Council of the Blind (ACB), California Council of the Blind (CCB), and many other organizations. Lutheran Braille Workers also works with numerous individual churches of all denominations, as well as independent organizations who serve the Blind and Visually Impaired.

In addition, Lutheran Braille Workers is now meeting the Large Print needs of prisons and jails around the United States with our 14-point Large Print Bible. If you are a chaplain or prison official seeking Large Print Bibles for your location, please contact us directly to make an order.

Lutheran Braille Workers provides all our resources for free for any organization who is serving men and women who are Visually Impaired or Blind. We can send large quantities of any book we produce, but you must call our headquarters to place these orders- 1-800-925-6092.

Educate Others

Lutheran Braille Workers believes there is an unfortunate stigma attached to individuals who are Blind or Visually Impaired. This is seen throughout the world in which 95% of all those in this community are unchurched. In the United States alone, fewer than 9% of individuals with severe Visual Impairment have meaningful careers, and less than 40% can access jobs at all. Churches and schools fear opening their doors because they often do not know how to serve men, women, and children who are Blind or Visually Impaired.

The key to overcoming these fears is through education. If your church, organization, school, or community group would like to learn more about Braille, Large Print, or how to provide services to this underserved population, please contact us.

Lutheran Braille Workers provides free materials for people of all ages regarding Blindness and Visual Impairment, including school packets, brochures, Braille sheets, and worksheets. In addition, Lutheran Braille Workers can help you learn how to run a “Dining in the Dark” experience at your facility. Most of these resources are available in our “Materials section” of our website, but if you need anything additional, please contact our headquarters directly.

Speakers and Presentations

Finally, if you are seeking a speaker or presentation regarding our ministry, please let us know as far in advance as possible, and often arrangements can be worked out.
